Researchers at Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has been closely tracking these developments, providing insights into how government-backed threat actors have misused Gemini, Google’s generative AI platform, for malicious purposes.

Understanding the Threat Landscape

The threats in focus typically come from two main categories of actors: Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups and Information Operations (IO) actors. APT groups are often state-sponsored and engage in espionage, cyberattacks, and disruptive activities targeting specific organizations or individuals. IO actors, meanwhile, manipulate public perception by influencing online narratives, often using tactics like sockpuppet accounts and coordinated messaging.

Efforts to counter these threats often involve leveraging intelligence to detect and disrupt malicious activities before they can cause harm. This includes understanding how emerging technologies like AI are being incorporated into cyberattacks.
